Train car HVAC solutions by Lumikko

For more than 50 years, Lumikko has been a pioneer in developing and implementing HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and thermal management solutions for rolling stock. The goals of carbon neutrality, congestion and the need for space in city centres have made the development of public transport one of the key focus areas in the largest cities.

Lumikko has extensive experience in the product development of thermal management solutions for rolling stock. Through persistent work, we have become one of the leading experts in the field. In 1992, we designed and implemented the first air conditioning solutions for diesel train locomotives. Today, Lumiko’s thermal management solutions can be found on almost all double-decker trains and trams operating in Finland.

The regenrative braking system developed by Lumikko Oy in 2011 is used in all trams of Tampere Tramway. With the help of the system, the energy generated during braking is recovered and transferred to to heating use in the passenger compartments according to needs. According to calculations, one tram in Tampere uses approximately 120,000 kWh of energy per year for heating, and picking up to 74,000 kWh of braking energy can be saved per car.
