In October 2024, Lumikko proudly received the international ISO 14001 environmental certification. This esteemed recognition highlights our dedication to managing environmental impacts and driving sustainable development. The certification further strengthens Lumikko’s position as a trusted and responsible partner across all our processes.

Continuous Development: Integrating ISO 14001 into Lumikko’s Operations

The ISO 14001 certification process provided and excellent opportunity to assess and advance our environmental practices sustainably. Eemil Heikkilä, our HSEQ Development Engineer, who played a key role in the project, explains:

“We conducted the necessary surveys and groundwork ourselves, allowing us to gain a clear understanding of where we stand in terms of environmental impact management and where we can improve.”

Once the internal assessments were completed, we partnered with experts to implement a management system that supports operational development and paves the way for group-level certification in the future.

“I am very pleased with the success of this project. Thanks to the entire staff for their significant contributions”, adds Pakkanen.

Lumikko’s commitment to continuous environmental improvement is evident in our recent production layout overhaul. Completed in the spring of 2024, the new layout promotes greater material efficiency and enables the reuse and recycling of byproducts. Lumikko’s Environmental Priorities and Carbon Footprint:

Carbon footprint assessments for 2021 and 2023 have helped us identify ways to reduce both our own and our customers’ environmental impact. Lumikko’s environmental priorities are focused on achieving this goal, and include:

• Exploring natural refrigerants and developing new solutions to deliver the best possible outcomes.
• Continuously evaluating and selecting suppliers who prioritize sustainability and responsibility.
• Providing energy-efficient products to support sustainable industries, such as:
  
  • Helping to shift transportation systems towards more sustainable rail and tram-based passenger and freight transport.
  • Supporting the energy transition with low-carbon technologies, such as thermal management for charging systems, batteries and energy storage solutions.
  • Minimizing lifecycle emissions of our solutions and improving maintainability.

Our ultimate aim is to increase our positive environmental impact through continuous improvement.

Next steps and responsibility work

By 2025, we aim to extend ISO 14001 certification across the entire Lumikko Group, including Lumikko Huoltopalvelut Oy. As a leading thermal management partner, we’re committed to implementing a management system that fosters continuous operational development, enabling us to meet environmental goals at the group level.
