Summer 2024 at Lumikko Through the Eyes of Our Summer Workers

Lumikko provides students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and gain practical experience by working on diverse projects that match their skills. Our 2024 summer employees share their experiences. Matti Sotikoff, Teemu Viitanen, Otto Tikkala, Matias Rajamäki, and Veikko Fränti have been involved in finance, buying, production, and research.

Varied Tasks and Skill Development

Matti Sotikoff, 23, an industrial engineering student working in finance, found the summer both versatile and educational.

“I worked on financial development and gained a deep understanding of Lumikko’s business, seeing how different functions are connected and impact the company,” Sotikoff explained.

His role required independent work and a broad view of the business.

Teemu Viitanen, 24, an energy engineering student, worked in research, particularly focusing on natural refrigerants.

“I studied legislation and various simulation tools, learning a lot about refrigeration systems and their design,” said Viitanen.

Otto Tikkala, 22, another industrial engineering student, took on the role of an operational buyer.

“I dove into procurement management and learned about handling supplier relationships in a growing company,” Tikkala explained.

Matias Rajamäki, 17, a mechanic student, and Veikko Fränti, 18, an electrician student, both worked in production, focusing on mechanical and electrical sub-assemblies.

“I worked as a mechanic, assembling components that go into our various cooling, thermal management, and air conditioning units,” said Rajamäki.

Fränti added, “I worked on electrical sub-assemblies, like instrumentation. It’s a nice, clean indoor job.”

A Quick Rectruitment Process

The summer workers came to Lumikko through different routes. Sotikoff applied via an open application, and the process moved quickly.

“I had a good impression of Lumikko as a local resident. I was familiar with the company and was glad the recruitment process went smoothly,” Sotikoff shared.

Viitanen learned about Lumikko at a trade fair and was drawn to opportunities in product development and simulation.

“The clear focus in thermal  management at the fair caught my attention, and the role matched my skills. The recruitment process was also fast,” Viitanen said.

Tikkala heard about Lumikko from a fellow student. “The entire recruitment process took about a month,” he noted.

Rajamäki and Fränti applied for internships based on suggestions from their teachers and acquaintances, which later turned into summer jobs.

Expectations and Highlights of the Summer

Each summer worker had different expectations. Sotikoff looked forward to interesting tasks, and his experience exceeded those expectations.

“The work and what I learned were more varied than I had imagined,” Sotikoff remarked.

For Viitanen, it was initially challenging to define his tasks, but once things settled, he could develop new ideas with his team.

“A highlight was the Summer Days where we had the chance to get to know each other better,” Viitanen added.

Tikkala highlighted a joint strategy project that the summer employees presented to the management team as one of the key moments of his summer.

For Fränti, working with prototype machines and learning new things were the highlights.

Why Lumikko?

The summer workers recommend Lumikko to anyone ready to take responsibility, learn, and be a team player.

“Lumikko is perfect for a motivated individual who enjoys teamwork,” said Sotikoff. Tikkala echoed this sentiment, encouraging those with enthusiasm and a drive to get things done to apply.

“Lumikko fosters a culture of development. There’s a good sense of humor in the team—while the work is taken seriously, the atmosphere is not serious,” he summed up.

Rajamäki emphasized the importance of practical skills and motivation for production roles.

Opportunities for Growth and Learning

Lumikko offers young professionals a chance to deepen their skills, gain hands-on experience, and participate in projects that impact the entire business. As Tikkala put it:

“It’s great that interns and summer employees are entrusted with tasks that are important to the company and allow them to develop their own skills.”

All the summer employees from 2024 have continued working part-time alongside their studies.

Otto Tikkala continues in procurement development, while Viitanen continues his research and simulations related to natural refrigerants.
