VR has challenged companies to take part in a campaign to name railway lines after companies that have made a commitment to travel by train. The aim is to encourage companies to use zero-emission commuting. Finland has a network of 6 000 km of lines.
On 12 April 2023, the Seinäjoki-Parkano section of the route was designated for Lumikko Oy.
“Lumikko is a long-term partner to VR in thermal management solutions. It is very natural for us to also encourage our employees to travel by train. Many of our employees also commute to work from other locations by train on regular basis and we support this,” says Kimmo Pyykönen, Managing Director of Lumikko Oy.
Lumikko Oy has been providing and maintaining thermal management and air conditioning solutions for VR’s rolling stock for over 30 years.
“We are on our way to a greener future. The way we move has an impact on the environment. That’s why we want to encourage our staff to choose a carbon-neutral train for their business trips.”
VR informs that every train journey is carbon neutral. 95% of VR’s trains run on renewable electricity generated by hydropower, and emissions from trains running on non-electrified lines have been cancelled.
The first designated railway lines were announced on 30 March 2023. Lumikko Oy was awarded the “Runners of their own railway” certificate and a designated line section on 12 April 2023.
